To get a better idea of the bicycle ridership in Encinitas, we decided to take a survey and to uses Highway 101 as the first location. We knew these numbers would be the highest of any road in Encinitas but it was a good place to start as cyclist used the road in good numbers and the surveyor also lived a few houses away. So in April we did a 2 week survey.
The location we used to take the survey was Highway 101 and Avocado Street in Leucadia, better known as the Leucadia Donut Shop. The southbound traffic was surveyed the first week and the second week we surveyed the northbound traffic. Each day, traffic was sampled at three different times (morning, noon, and evening) generally around the same time each day. The survey would last for 15 minutes in which all vehicles and cyclist would be recorded.
What brought this all on was a monthly meeting with the BikeWalkEncinitas group. We were reviewing a document compiled by the city and came across data for bike ridership in the community and their goal for improving it. The ridership number was 0.48% and their goal was to increase that number to 0.53%. These numbers caught our interest so we decided to find out for ourselves. Below are the bikes and cars we observed during the two week survey.
|Southbound Traffic||Cars||Bikes||% of bikes to cars|
|Thursday April 9th||744||20||3%|
|Friday April 10th||690||24||4%|
|Saturday April 11th||614||68||11%|
|Sunday April 12th||225||43||19%|
|Monday April 13th||744||11||2%|
|Tuesday April 14th||607||24||4%|
|Wednesday April 15th||497||27||5%|
|Thursday April 16th||245||15||6%|
|Friday April 17th||410||6||2%|
|Saturday April 18th||402||119||30%|
|Sunday April 19th||215||39||18%|
|Monday April 20th||383||14||4%|
|Tuesday April 21st||202||14||7%|
|Wednesday April 22nd||378||29||8%|
The ridership along Highway 101 was actually higher than we anticipated and this was without counting the two largest groups that ride through Encinitas on Saturday, the San Diego Bicycle Club and Swami’s Cycling Club. Also surprisingly, during the two week survey, there was never a 15 minute period in which a bike was not counted, pointing to the fact that Highway 101 is continuously used by cyclist as well as cars. This survey has been an encouragement to BikeWalkEncinitas because it has reinforced our commitment to serve the cycling community in Encinitas, not only for the residents of this city but also for the surrounding communities and tourist passing through.
