What bike are you riding?
I think it is a Univega that I bought off Craigslist. I’ve had it about 5 years. Everyone wanted to go on longer rides so I got a bike with more gears to get over the climbs. It has a triple in the front and 5-speed in the rear and a leather Brooks saddle to sit on. It’s the best.
Didn’t you have another bike before this one?
It was a 3-speed Electra Amsterdam. I loved that bike and rode it everywhere. Electra gave me the bike for some modeling work I did for their publication. But I sold it to get my new bike.
How many bikes do you have?
My husband and I have 2 bikes and 2 cars.
Do you ride to work?
Well, I live so close that I usually walk to work. But I ride to all my meetings and most of my errands. I like to challenge myself to not use the car. Not only because it’s healthy for me and the environment but because it is the most efficient mode of transportation. It takes just a few minutes longer for me to ride to the gym, city hall, and the farmers markets then to drive. And it clears my head, makes me feel alive, and gives me a greater sense of being part of the community. Love parking by the front door too.
What is your favorite ride?
I love the ride from Leucadia to Solana Beach. It is such a beautiful ride along the beach. I usually don’t ride far, mostly around Encinitas but I did ride with friends to Stone brewery in Escondido once. We rode through Elfin Forest which was amazing. It felt like we were out in the country.
You don’t mind the traffic?
No, the bike lanes and sharrows work well. I do ride down 2nd Street going through downtown Encinitas and I use Neptune quite a bit going north.
Do you ride outside of work?
All the time. We will ride to Fish 101 for dinner or downtown for an event. We have lights, front and back, and these really cool rope lights in the wheels. We get the most comments, probably 4 or 5 a night, about those wheel lights. Especially the kids, they love it.
